10 Bangladeshis detained in Silchar jail to be deported from Assam Thursday

Ten Bangladeshis currently detained in Silchar Jail in the Indian state of Assam will be sent back to their country of origin on Thursday.

They had been lodged in the Silchar detention centre for a long time now.

Cachar Deputy Commissioner S Vishwanathan on Wednesday told bdnews24.com about the decision to send the Bangladeshi nationals back to their own country.

According to the official, the Bangladeshi nationals will start their journey back home at 5am Thursday and they are likely to cross Karimganj border at around 10am.

There has always been a lot of politics in Assam regarding the issue of illegal Bangladeshi issue but due to good relations between the neighbouring country and the present Indian government, the Bangladesh government has agreed to take back their nationals this time.

When contacted, Cachar district police’s Superintendent Rajbir Singh said that 9 Bangladeshis were detained from Karimganj while one Bangladeshi was caught in Silchar.

Singh also said that most cases are new ones while few others are disputed.

Earlier, there was the push back policy, but now they are required to verify and seek approval from the government of that country and then proceed with deportation. On the other hand, disputed cases are sent to Foreigner Tribunals.

According to a source in the Assam government, the issue was discussed in a DM level conference last year between the deputy commissioners of the bordering districts of India and Bangladesh.

A meeting on deportation of illegal Bangladeshi nationals also took place where India put forward all records to the Bangladesh government and requested them to take action.

The issue was discussed at length and the details of all detainees were handed over to both Sylhet and Moulvibazaar DCs.

Consequently, Bangladeshi officials verified and agreed to take back their nationals. Two minor children of Archana Dash will also be deported back to Bangladesh tomorrow.

Another official said that although the process was slow but they are happy that the issue is being sorted out amicably.
