He made the statement during a programme organised to mark the occasion at the Bangabhaban on Tuesday.

Hamid said puja and other festivals were part of Bengali tradition and culture and had never been confined to religious groups only. "Such festivals are universal."

The president exchanged greetings with several personalities of the Hindu community at his official residence.

“I hope that the core message of religion and our Bengali tradition and culture helps us create the ‘Golden Bengal’  that Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had dreamt of.”

“Let the joy of the Durga Puja festivals spread and strengthen our unity and free the nation from bigotry and superstitions,” Hamid added.
The president wife Rashida Khanam and Religious Affairs Minister Matior Rahman were present at the event.
Ramkrishna Math Principal Swami Dhrabeshanondo Mohoraj and other Hindu leaders exchanged greetings with the president.
State Minister for Youth and Sports Biren Sikder and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Harsh Vardhan Shringla also exchanged greetings with Hamid.
