Ejaj Hossain, 40, was shot in the head around 8am on Monday while returning home on a motorbike with a co-worker at Sadar Upazila, said family members.

His brother Badal Hossain has claimed that ‘Mosto Member’, an 'infamous criminal' of the area, had shot Ejaj after he was waylaid.

Later locals carried him to Jessore General Hospital.

Abdur Rashid, a physician of the hospital, said Ejaj died before reaching the hospital.

Chairman of Churamonkati Union unit of Awami League Abdul Mannan Munna confirmed that Ejaj was an activist of the unit.

Kotwali police OC Md Ilias Hossain said rumours suggested the murder followed a dispute over occupying a wetland.

“The matter is under investigation,” he said, adding that the body had been kept at the Jessore General Hospital morgue.
