The Fire Service divers initially believed that the body of the driver of the stricken car was inside it.

However, when rescuers pulled the car out to the surface, using a steamer at 3pm on Saturday and then towing it to the shore, they found the car empty.

The search for the missing driver was on, Munshiganj Sadar Police Station OC Yunus Ali said on Saturday evening.

The Munshiganj-bound sedan lost control on the bridge on Friday midnight and plunged into the Dhaleshwari river.

Police have identified the car's owner and the man behind the wheels.

Muktarpur Naval Police Camp in-charge Md Mosharraf Hossain said the car was owned by one Abdur Rouf, a businessman from Narayanganj.

His son, 20-year-old Jalaluddin Bhuiyan Rumi, was driving the car, said the police officer quoting the family.

"The family said Rumi had gone for a drive at Muktarpur Bridge at night with the chauffeur, Md Rubel," he said.

"Rubel says Rumi dropped him off at the southern end of the bridge and drove himself. The car hit the railing after Rumi took a u-turn on the bridge."

Fire Service divers rushed to the scene and around 2am on Saturday found a bumper of the car.

The rescue operation, however, had to be suspended due to strong currents in the river but was later resumed around 9am.

Police said the car was spotted around 10am, more than 10 hours after it had plunged into the river.
