Police said the murder took place in front of the old college building at Fulbarhi on Thursday afternoon.
The victim, identified as Ibrahim Hossain Sabuj, 23, of Kahalu Upazila, was a master’s student of the Bangla department, said Chhilimpur police outpost Sub-Inspector (SI) Shah Alam.
Bangladesh Chhatra League’s district unit President Naimul Razzak Titas said Sabuj was an activist of the ruling party’s student wing. He also blamed a leader of the party’s youth front Juba League for the murder.
SI Alam told bdnews24.com that Sabuj had an altercation with some local goons over rickshaw fare. “At one point, they stabbed Sabuj and his friend Shiblu.”
He said both were being rushed to Shaheed Ziaur Rahman Medical College Hospital when Sabuj succumbed to his injuries.
‘Shiblu’, 25, of Fulbarhi, has been admitted to the hospital.
The students of the college, carrying Sabuj’s body, demonstrated through Bogra town afterwards.
Speaking to bdnews24.com, Chhatra League leader Titas alleged, “Juba League’s Sadar Ward No. 2 unit’s General Secretary Nurul Islam had led the attack on Sabuj as he had protested a mugging incident.”
Nurul Islam was unavailable on the phone for comment.
Bogra Assistant Senior Superintendent of Police Gaziur Rahman earlier had said that their initial suspicion was that the stabbing had occurred during a heated dispute over rickshaw fare.
Sadar police OC Emdad Hossain said Sabuj’s body was handed over to his family.
No case had started over the killing yet, but police are trying to catch those involved in the incident, he added.
