Four sentenced to death, two to life for 2014 Barguna murder

A Barguna court has sentenced four to death and two to life for murdering cattle trader Naya Mia in Amtoli four years ago.

Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Abu Taher came up with the verdict on Wednesday after hearing 19 witnesses and  arguments, prosecution lawyer Aktaruzzaman Bahadur said.

The four who will have to walk to the gallows are Shahidul Islam Chowkidar, Barek Chowkidar, Bashir Matubbar and ‘Moazzem’.

Those sentenced to life are Abdur Rob Chowkidar and ‘Mozibor’.

All the convicts were produced before the court when the judge gave the verdict. 

They were also sentenced to three years in jail and fined Tk 100,000 each on another charge.

Defence counsel Kamal Kanti Das said they were not happy at the verdict and would challenge it in High Court.

Naya Mia was thrashed to death on Apr 10 2012 when he was returning home at Cholavanga village. The murderers snatched away Tk 70,000 from him.

His son Md Nasir Uddin filed a case at Amtoli Police Station accusing the six.

He on Wednesday demanded swift execution of the sentences.
