Bangladesh writing genius Syed Shamsul Haq set for last grand goodbye

Preparations are in place at the Central Shaheed Minar for the legion of fans and admirers of Syed Shamsul Haq to bid him a teary farewell.

On Wednesday, the mortal remains of the maverick litterateur will be brought to the Shaheed Minar where his readers and well wishers will pay him their final respects.

He will then be buried at his native Kurhigram where he was born 81 springs ago.

The prolific writer passed away at Dhaka's United Hospital on Tuesday after losing his battle against lung cancer.

Poet and physician Dr Ashraf Jewel said the body would be taken to his Gulshan home where an ablution will be performed followed by a namaz-e-janaza.

Later at night, the remains will be placed at the hospital morgue in a coffin.

At 10 in the morning, those will be taken to the Bangla Academy premises where mourners will pay their tributes.

In 1966, when he was merely 29, Syed Haq became youngest writer to be honoured with the Bangla Academy award.

In 1984, he became the recipient of the prestigious Ekushey Padak.

His literary genius goes across genres and he is known to wield equal mastery over essays, novels, poetry, film screenplay, songs and plays. Haq has written over 100 books.

From the Bangla Academy, the coffin will be carried to the Central Shaheed Minar on Wednesday where people from all strata of society can pay their last respects to the writer.

After another namaz-e-janaza at the Dhaka University Central Mosque, his mortal remains would be taken to Kurhigram, where he was born on Dec 27, 1935.

Last year during an intellectuals' meet at Kurhigram Government College, he had made known his last wish to be buried in his native place.

The college authorities had immediately decided to take the government permission to honour the wish.
