The elite police unit conducted a raid, which lasted for several hours, at the slum near the port city's Ice Factory Road on Tuesday.

Chittagong-based RAB 7 chief Col Miftah Uddin Ahmed said two firearms, including an AK-22 semi-automatic assault rifle, two magazines, 16 rocket flares and four sharp weapons had been recovered during the raid.

"The slum, which is known to be a hub for illegal drugs, was being watched," he told the media.

The weapons were found in a sewerage lane inside the slum.

Sensing the raid, residents of two rooms beside the lane managed to flee, Col Miftah said.

RAB has detained two persons from the slum for questioning in connection with the haul.

There are 5000 houses in the slum, which covers a vast area beside Chittagong Railway Station.

Miftah said it was a convenient place to hide as no IDs were required for renting an accommodation.

He said AK-22 rifles had been seized from militants in Dhaka recently and from the militant outfit ‘Shaheed Hamza Brigade’ last year.

“We are investigating whether the arms are linked to militants,” he said.

Miftah Uddin said the identities of the fugitives could not be confirmed yet.
