Local police's Inspector Harun-ur-Rashid said the incident was reported was around 4am at Ruhitapar in Bakerganj municipality.
He said Khokan Khan, 32, who was killed, was wanted in connection with a robbery at police officer's house in Bakerganj municipality in August.
"Khokan was arrested by detectives on Sunday night at Maheshpur Bazar. Police took him on a raid to recover weapons. Other robbers of his gang fired and police retaliated," said Harun-ur-Rashid.
He said Khokan was taken to the Upazila health complex in injured condition. Doctors declared him dead soon after.
Two firearms, ammunitions and some sharp weapons were recovered from the spot, Rashid said.
