Moinul Khan, Director General of Customs Intelligence and Investigation, on Monday said the cars were seized from different spots across Moulvibazar and Sylhet during this month.

Tipped off, the customs officials recovered a Mitsubishi Pajero Sport 2972cc from Srimangal on Sep 2, Nissan-300 ZX from Paton village of Moulvibazar on Sep 5 and a Jaguar from Londoni Road in Sylhet on Sep 22, he said at a press briefing.

The accumulated market price of the three cars is estimated to be Tk 100 million. The owners had evaded paying Tk 80 million as duties, said the official.

As per an international charter, tourists can enter one country from another with their vehicles without paying duties through the ‘Carnet de Passage’ facility.

However, many bring their cars and leave the country in a few months after selling them. A ring was engaged in the buying and selling of these cars entering Bangladesh without paying duties, said Moinul.

He said: “The owners could not be detained. They can take back their cars upon paying the duties.”

Owners will be legally penalised if they do not pay them, warned the director general.
