Ahmed Reza, who is in his 30s, had his meeting with his Facebook friend, a 28-year-old Jessore housewife, cut short when sleuths arrested them from a local hotel in Jessore on Saturday noon, Kotwali SI Jiarat Hussain confirmed.

Asked why the pair had been arrested, Hussain said that an NSI team arrested them and handed them over to the police.

Although they have been brought to the police station, they have not been quizzed yet, he said, and added that the matter would be investigated.

Meanwhile, the woman claimed that Reza and she had become friends on the social networking site Facebook about a year and half ago.

On Friday evening, Reza had crossed over to Bangladesh through the Benapole land port and had put up at the RS Hotel here.

When the woman went to meet him at the hotel on Saturday, they were arrested, she said.

Reza, who knows little English or Bengali, spoke in Hindi through the lady and said that he worked as a marketing executive in a Delhi company.

The woman has picked up her Hindi by watching television soaps.
