The call came on Thursday after locals at the district's South Surma Upazila set a bus on fire following road crash which left two killed the previous day.

District Transport Workers' Union President Salim Ahmed Falik said two motorcycle riders were run over by a bus on Wednesday on the Dhaka-Sylhet Highway.

Agitated locals set fire to the bus and vandalised a few other vehicles following the incident.

“Long-haul buses will not enter or leave Sylhet for an indefinite period,” he said.

The strike resulted in commuter woes as several of them were seen stranded at bus terminals.

Rashid Ahmed, a resident of Bogra, said: “I came for a visit on Wednesday and came to know about the strike after coming to the terminal to return home.”
