Identifying the man as Humayun Kabir, 30, of Barisal, the law enforcers say he was one of the five 'kidnappers' who had abducted a local businessman with Tk 1.1 million on Monday afternoon from the Upazila's Chaorharhat area.

The five were, however, caught by locals after an hour when their get-away microbus met with an accident at Shaltigopalpur.

They were later handed over to police while the businessman was rescued.

Pirganj police OC Rezaul Karim said the so-called shootout that killed Kabir took place in the early hours of Tuesday in the Upazila's Chandipur area.

He said based on information Kabir provided, police launched a raid around 3:30am in that area and had taken the man with them.

"Kabir's accomplices had started shooting after seeing the policemen, forcing the law enforcers to return fire. Kabir was shot at the time.

"He was rushed to Pirganj Upazila Health Complex, but duty doctors declared him dead," the OC claimed.

Dr Kamal Pasha of the hospital said Kabir was shot in the back of his head. "He died long before he was brought to the hospital."
