They discussed a variety of challenges the Commonwealth is facing during the meeting at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday, said a press release from the intergovernmental organisation of 53 member states.

It said the two leaders spoke about the need to end extremism, increase the empowerment of women and young girls as well as climate change.

They promised to work together to develop a toolkit of best practices in a number of areas, including trade, good governance, rule of law and to ensure religious and political freedoms across the Commonwealth, the release said.

It quoted Patricia Janet Scotland as saying, "It's important everyone in the Commonwealth looks to each other to create a free and democratic family of nations. It was a pleasure to hear Sheikh Hasina's ideas and her promise to help us all."
