The official spokesperson made the statement on Friday in response to a question, according to the India's external affairs ministry.

"India has been supportive of a judicial process under the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) of Bangladesh to address the pending issue of justice for war crimes committed during the movement for the independence of Bangladesh in 1971.

"The ICT process to bring the perpetrators of war crimes to justice has wide popular support in Bangladesh.

"It is also an internal issue of Bangladesh," read the statement.

India fought for Bangladesh against its fierce foe Pakistan during the 1971 war.

Pakistan has been criticising Bangladesh for trying its collaborators since the setting up of the war crimes tribunal in 2010.

Six of the convicts have so far been hanged for crimes against humanity they committed during the war.

Turkey has also been critical of the trial for 1971 genocide and other atrocities against Bengalis.

It said "the wounds of the past cannot be healed with these methods".

Bangladesh has protested the remarks by both countries.
