Twenty-three years old Nusrat Jahan moved to Canada three years ago with her family.

Her father is an administrative accountant at the Bangladesh High Commission in Ottawa.

She had been studying accounting at Willis College.

CBC News reported Nusrat was hit and killed while cycling on a segregated bike lane on her way to school on Thursday.

She was struck by a Tomlinson construction truck and pinned under its back wheel at the intersection of Lyon Street and Laurier Avenue West – only two blocks from her family's apartment – around 7:45am (local time).

"In our family, she was the most beloved of all of us...because she was always the smallest," the CBC quoted her brother Mohd Abdullah Al Nasser as saying.

"Everyone is devastated. We can't believe that this happened," he added.

The members of the Bangladeshi community in Canada, including the officials of the high commission, are shocked by the news of Nusrat's death.

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson has expressed condolence.

Tomlinson Construction, the owner of the truck, has also expressed its sadness in a statement. It said the company is cooperating with the police investigation and launching its own into the fatal crash.
