They were caught in two separate raids at Dhaka's Tantibazar and Aminbazar in Savar, said the elite police unit's spokesperson Mizanur Rahman Bhuiyan at a media briefing on Friday.

Each gram of 22-carat gold now costs Tk 4,145, according to the Bangladesh Jewellers Association.

If the seized gold is of that quality, the haul is worth almost Tk 50 million.

The four are members of an international smuggling network that brings in gold bars and jewelleries in Bangladesh from Singapore, Malaysia and Middle East, he added.

“Taposh Malakar, his wife Monty Malakar and Dulal Chandra Das were arrested in a microbus with 24 gold bars,” said Mizanur, assistant director of RAB's Media and Legal Wing.

Their interrogation led to the arrest of Malik Dinbondhu Sarker, owner of Ontor Silver Store, and the discovery of 4.15 kilograms of gold including 32 gold bars in his house in Tantibazar.

“They could not show documents proving the legitimacy of the gold in their possession,” said the RAB official.

“We are assuming that they were trying to smuggle the gold into India.”
