Two to die, two more get life in jail for 2014 murder of worker in Gazipur

A Gazipur court has sentenced two men to death and two others to life imprisonment for murdering a female RMG worker two years ago.

District and Sessions Judge AKM Enamul Haque handed down the sentences on Tuesday in the presence of three of the convicts.

The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each. Those sentenced to life term will have to suffer one month more in jail if they fail to pay the fine.

The two who will have to walk the gallows are Md Kalam and Iqbal Hossain.

The other two with the life sentence are Abdul Latif and Md Mokhles.

All of them are from Sreepur Upazila. Of the four, only Iqbal is on the run.

According to tge case details, the victim, Rupali Khatun, 25, used to work at a readymade garment factory at Gazipur's Chandana.

Iqbal and the three others had forcefully taken her inside a jungle near a farm in Sreepur on the evening of Aug 15, 2014.

Failing to get Tk 20,000 from her father as ransom, they strangled Rupali to death and left her body tied to a pillar of the farm's perimeter wall.

Police recovered her body the following morning on being notified by the locals.

A day later, Sreepur Model Police Station's Sub-Inspector A Malek Khan started the murder case, Public Prosecutor Md Haris Uddin Ahmed said.

He said after their arrests, Kalam, Latif and Mokhles confessed in court to killing Rupali.

Police submitted the chargesheet against the four on Apr 28 last year.
