Case investigation officer Humayun Kabir presented him in court on Monday.

Metropolitan Magistrate Ahsan Habib sent Hasanat to jail as police did not plead for more time for questioning, court police’s prosecution wing Deputy Commissioner Md Anisur Rahman said.

Hasanat is still the only person arrested in the case over the attack on an upscale Gulshan cafe in which 22 people, including 17 foreigners and two police officers, were killed.

His lawyer Shah Md Shahab Uddin said the court has fixed Aug 24 to hear Hasanat’s bail plea.

Hasanat and Tahmid Hasib Khan, a Bangladeshi expatriate student from Canada, were among the 13 hostages rescued from Holey Artisan Bakery and O’ Kitchen on Jul 2 morning.

Police had questioned and released all rescued hostages, except the two. They were shown arrested as suspects on Aug 3.

They were later remanded under Section-54 of the Bangladesh Penal Code. Police took Hasanat into the eight-day remand showing as the first arrestee in the case.

The interrogation ended on Monday.

Police, however, have not brought any charges against Tahmid or showed him arrested. But he is still behind bars following a court order.
