The incident, which took place around 4am on Tuesday, left three policemen injured, said Rajshahi metro police spokesperson Ifte Khayer Alam.

Unidentified men opened fire and hurled crude bombs on a Detective Branch team at the city’s Kharkhari area during a raid.

“Police retaliated by opening fire forcing the attackers to flee.  A man with gunshot wounds was found on the spot.

“He was taken to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead,” said Assistant Commissioner Alam.

Police have found a pistol and traces of exploded bombs on the spot, said the senior police officer.

He added that three policemen have been hospitalised for injuries sustained during the shooting.
