Police said that unidentified men attacked 42-year-old Anwar Hossain, who was elected from Ramrail Union, around 11pm on Saturday.

His son-in-law Chhinu Mia, 26, has been critically injured in the attack at a village near the district town, said Brahmanbarhia police OC Md Moinur Rahman.

Quoting locals, he said that the two were attacked while they were riding on a motor-cycle on their way home.

Men, armed with sharp weapons, waylaid them. Local rushed them to the local hospital, where the doctors advised to transfer Hossain to Dhaka as his condition was critical.

The UP member died around 1am on Sunday while being moved to the capital.

Residents told police that the victim had a running feud with one Yeasin Mia, who lost the election. They suspect Mia’s supporters attacked him.

OC Rahman said that two people have been detained over the murder and that a case is yet to be filed.
