Twelve dead as trawler sinks in Narsinghdi

Twelve people, including six children have died and at least eight others are still missing in a trawler mishap on the Arialkhan River, in Narsinghdi.

Police said the vessel capsized around 11:30am on Saturday in the district’s Raipura Upazila.

Local police OC Azharul Islam told the media that the boat sank because it had too many passengers.

“Locals managed to tug the sunken trawler to the bank after they heard the passengers screaming.

Most of the passengers managed to swim to the shore. Bodies of 12 people, including children have been found,” he said.

The Fire Service divers called off the rescue operation to trace the missing in the evening, added OC Islam.

Ten of the victims have been so far identified. They are ‘Yasin’, 7, Mazedar Nesa, 50,  ‘Jerin’, 6, ‘Marzia’, 4, Maleka Khatun, 50, ‘Rakibul’, 8 and ‘Samrat’, 8, ‘Rabbi’, 6, ‘Jinuk’, 6, and ‘Sumaiya’, 7.
