The local Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) camp’s Subedar Shamsul Haque said the victim had been identified as Shahidul Islam Foney, 35, a resident of border village Putkhali.

He said local inhabitants informed them after they spotted a body floating in the Ichhamoti River that forms a border between the two countries. “The Benapole police recovered the corpse and sent it to a hospital for autopsy.”

Quoting the victim’s family, Haque told bdnews24.com that Faney had crossed over to India with a group of cattle traders on Friday night.

“BSF (Border Security Force) troopers fired at them early morning Saturday when they were returning. Faney died on the spot. The BSF dumped the body in the river,” he said.
