Briefing the media at his office on Thursday, he said, “It is with deep concern that we notice a vicious circle is spreading false, baseless and made-up rumours about impending terror attacks and spreading panic among the public mind.
“Sometimes they say there would be an attack within 48 hours...within 72 hours. They say schools will be targeted, restaurants...markets and malls... hotels will be targeted.”
“Spreading such rumours is a crime of forgery. It is my humble request to everyone not to buy such lies,” Mia said.
Following the July 1 Gulshan attack, several Facebook and Twitter accounts predicted another attack. The Sholakia attack came within a week of the Gulshan carnage.
“Spreading such lies spreads panic in the minds of the people and destabilises the country and hinders its progress.
“Those behind these lies are actually patrons of the terrorists. We are contemplating action against them as per the prevalent law of the country,” he said.
He assured people of full protection by police and asked them to go about their normal daily work.
“There is no security threat to the country,” the DMP chief said and asked the people to report any individual they find indulging in spreading such lies.
“Police are with you. We will do the best we can for your civil protection,” he assured.
