Police have identified the victim as Saiful Islam and said that he was an activist of the Jamaat-e-Islami’s student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir.

Additional Superintendent of Police Sheikh Azbahar Ali said that the shooting incident took place early morning Tuesday on the Jhenaidah-Magura Highway near the district town.

“The shooting erupted when a police patrol was bombed. The exchange of fire lasted for 10 minutes,” he said.

The body, with gunshot wounds, was found on the spot. “A firearm, some ammunition, five crude bombs and three sharp weapons have been also recovered,” added Ali.

The victim’s family, however, said that he was whisked away by some men in plain clothes, who claimed they were from the police, on Jun 1 from his home at Jhenaidah town.

“We had failed to trace him since then,” cousin Nasir Uddin said.
