Cardiologist M Akhteruzzaman passes away at 74

A senior cardiologist and former director of the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Prof M Akhteruzzaman, has passed away. He was 74.

His family in a statement said he died at the Metropolitan Medical Center (MMC) of old-age complications on Tuesday, and was laid to rest at the Rayer Bazar Buddhijibi graveyard.

He left behind his wife, three daughters, grandchildren and a host of relatives.

His Kulkhani will be held on Friday at house: 9/A, road: Dhanmondi-1 in Dhaka.

Born on Feb 21, 1942, Prof Zaman obtained his MRCP degree from the Royal College of Physicians, UK. He served as assistant Surgeon at the Dhaka Medical College from 1965-1970.

In his long career, he also served as a principal of the Holy Family Red Crescent Medical College and principal and professor of Cardiology at the Bangladesh Medical College.

He is the life member of the Bangladesh Medical Association (BMA), National Heart Foundation and Bangladesh Cardiac Society.

He received the Atish Dipankar scholar award in 2003 and the Deshbandhu C.R. Das Gold Medal award in 2004 for his contribution to medical science.
