Abir and Nibras, both students of private North South University, have been killed by security forces.

Some residents in Jhenaidah, requesting anonymity, said they had identified the duo after seeing their photos in the media.

Nibras was known as ‘Sayeed’ in the area.

“I saw him (Abir) with Sayeed. But I didn’t speak to him,” a student of a local college said.

Bilkis Nahar, a landlady in Jhenaidah, told bdnews24.com that Rokanuzzaman Rokan, the imam of a local mosque, had helped eight youths to rent her house at Hamdah Sonaliparha in February.

Rokan, a former student of Islami University, had told her that the eight had been studying at his university.

Bilkis said people identifying themselves as policemen picked Rokan and her husband Kawsar Ali, a former army man, before the Eid-ul-Fitr on July 7.

Jhenaidah Superintendent of Police Altaf Hossain, however, said he knew nothing about the detention of Rokan and Kawsar.

At least 20 hostages were killed in the Gulshan cafe attack on July 1. Security forces said six attackers, including Nibras, were killed in the raid to rescue the hostages.

Six days later on the Eid day, police gunned down Abir after an attack near Bangladesh’s largest congregation ground at Sholakia in Kishoreganj.

Another suspected Sholakia attacker was captured. He was identified as madrasa student Shafiul Islam alias Abu Mokaddel from Dinajpur.
