A police team escorted Headmaster Shyamal Kanti Bhakta to his Piyar Sattar Latif High School at Bandar Upazila on Sunday morning, Additional Superintendent of Police Md Zakaria said.

Zakaria said Bhakta was staying in his rented house under tight security.

“He has joined his workplace after two months of sick leave,” he said.

“Nothing unwanted happened there. We’ve arranged security for him.”

Bhakta later told reporters, “I am very happy to return to the school after a long time.”

He said he rejoined the school on education ministry orders.

His wife Sabita Rani Bhakta said she was also happy at his husband getting his job back.

“The government is providing us security. But some anxiety over security has remained,” she said.

The representative of the school’s teachers, Borhanul Islam, who teaches religion, has assured Bhakta of all help.

On May 13, Bhakta was beaten by a mob and made to do sit-ups holding his ears in public by Jatiya Party MP Salim Osman for allegedly insulting Islam.

As the incident sparked a storm of protests across Bangladesh, the government dissolved the school’s managing committee, which had sacked the senior teacher following the incident.

Bhakta, however, was reinstated, while Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid said a government inquiry had not found any truth in the allegations levelled against the teacher.

Salim Osman, a businessman-turned-politician, is from the powerful Osman family in the district.
