“It’s the government’s bold leadership that made the work start with our own funds. The progress of the project is satisfactory and it can be opened by 2018,” she told Parliament on Wednesday.

In December last year, Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the main construction for the 6-km bridge, scheduled to be completed in 2018.

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said last week that almost 35 percent of the work had been done.

During a question-and-answer session in the House, the prime minister said her government was committed to nabbing those involved in acts of “sabotage and violence”.

“The law enforcers and intelligence agencies have been instructed to take steps against the perpetrators and those who masterminded them,” she said replying a query from Tarikat Federation MP MA Awal.
