Six Gaibandha men including former Jamaat MP indicted for 1971 war crimes

The International Crimes Tribunal has ordered trial for six men from Gaibandha, including former Jamaat-e-Islami MP Abu Saleh Mohammad Abdul Aziz Mia aka Ghoramarha Aziz.

The court, on Tuesday, indicted them and fixed Aug 2 for the prosecution’s opening statements.

They have been charged with genocide, murder, illegal confinement, loot, arson, torture and other heinous crimes during Bangladesh’s Liberation War in 1971.

The Jamaat MP and his five accomplices -- Mohammad Ruhul Amin alias Manju, Mohammad Abdul Latif, Abu Muslim Mohammad Ali, Mohammad Nazmul Huda and Mohammad Abdur Rahim Mia -- have been indicted for these offences committed in Gaibandha Sadar and Sundarganj Upazilas.

They are all absconding.

Aziz is a central committee member of the Jamaat. He was a lawmaker from Sundarganj (Gaibandha-1) constituency in the 2001-2006 Parliament.

Charge-1

The accused along with 25-30 Pakistani soldiers swooped down on several houses in Moujamali village under Gaibandha Sadar Upazila on Oct 9. They captured and tortured four innocent unarmed pro-liberation men and later killed one of them -- Gonesh Chandra Barman -- by throwing him into water with his arms and legs tied. The accused looted houses of the detainees.

Charge-2

The accused gunned down Chhatra League leader Md Boys Uddin on Oct 13 and dumped his body underground.

Charge-3

The accused, supported by Pakistani Army members, detained 13 union council chairmen and members on Oct 10-13. They later killed them near a river and dumped the bodies.
