The muggers usually step up their activity ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr.

The five victims, found unconscious in Motijheel, Shahbagh and Dhaka University’s TSC area, were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Sunday night, said DMCH police outpost Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia.

Three of them were identified as Bangladesh Chhatra League’s Sutrapur unit leader Mohiuddin Muttar, 25, Nur Islam, 30, an office assistant in home ministry, and auto-rickshaw driver Rashed Uddin, 33.

Shahbagh Police Station’s duty officer Mostafirzur Rahman said two others, who were not yet identified until now, were found in unconscious state in TSC area.

They were sent to DMCH around 10:30pm Sunday.

SI Bachchu Mia said the first three had confirmed that those locally called the ‘Ogyan Party’ had drugged and mugged them.

Many of their victims have also died from the drugs the muggers use to knock them out.

Other victims, apart from losing all valuables, have suffered from long-term physical problems.

Police said they caught 24 muggers with such drugs on Jun 16 during raids at different parts of the capital.
