Police produce two more suspects in court over murder of SP Babul Aktar’s wife

​Police have informed of arresting two more suspects in the murder of Superintendent Babul Aktar’s wife.

“They have been sent to the court to record confessional statements,” Chittagong metro police (CMP) chief Iqbal Bahar saidon Sunday.
 
He said the suspects have been identified as Mohammad Wasim and ‘Anwar’.
 
“They are professional criminals ... now giving statements in court,” the CMP commissioner told the media.
 
On the morning of Jun 5, senior officer Babul Aktar’s wife was stabbed and shot dead in the port city while on her way to drop her son at school.
 
Police suspect Islamist militants were behind the murder as Babul had led several successful raids against them during his tenure in the Detective Branch at the south-eastern coastal district.
 
The police officer, who was recently promoted and transferred to the Police Headquarters, initiated a case over the killing, two days after he reported to Dhaka.
 
Chittagong police had arrested two suspects over the murder—Abu Nasur Gunnu on Jun 8 and Shah Zaman alias Robin on Jun 11 and secured remand from court to interrogate them.
 
Replying to a query over the previous arrests, CMP chief Bahar said on Sunday, “That is a separate issue.”
 
He said that Wasim, who was shown arrested on Sunday, was one of the assailants of the SP Babul’s wife, Mahmuda Aktar Mitu.
 
Witnesses said three men on a motorcycle had ambushed Mahmuda. The assailants hacked her and then shot her in the head to ensure she would die.
 
“It was Wasim who shot her,” said Commissioner Bahar.
 
The other suspect Anwar was ‘running reconnaissance’ during the murder, he claimed. 
 
The port city police chief said six to seven people were involved in the killing and their identity was ‘more or less confirmed’.
 
He added that the motive of the murder will be known once the rest of those involved have been nabbed.
 
On media reports saying eight people have been arrested over the killing, Bahar said, “We have questioned a lot of people. I would not refer to those as arrests or detention.”
 
On the matter of ‘questioning’ Superintendent Babul Aktar in Dhaka, the CMP commissioner said, “I will not refer that as questioning, we have discussed with them.”
 
Asked whether Babul was under surveillance, Bahar shot back, “Why should we keep the plaintiff under surveillance?”
 
He added, however, that “if any allegations (against Babul) turn out to be true after investigation, then there are provisions to initiate measures.”
