Judge of Additional Sessions Judge Court-1 Md Fazle Elahi Bhuiyan delivered the verdict on Thursday.

The convicts are Amena Begum, 53, her sons Md Sajal, 28, ‘Bappy’, 33, and ‘Tithi’, 31, and Md Badal, 42.

The court also fined them each Tk 10,000.

Tithi and Badal were present in court at the time. But the three others are still on the run, said State counsel APP Md Ataur Rahman.

Apprentice lawyer Md Firoz Jaman Sohel, 28, was hacked on Mar 9, 2008, at the district town’s Dakkhin Chhayabithi area. He died in hospital the next day.

Amena and her family hail from Patuakhali. Victim Sohel’s family lives in Gazipur town’s Rothkhola area.

His father Md Sohrab Uddin Bhandari had filed the murder case naming eight people after Sohel’s death, said APP Rahman.

Joydebpur police SI Md Jahidul Islam submitted the chargesheet against five in court on Jul 10 that year.

Quoting case details, Rahman said Tithi had first hacked Sohel’s younger brother Masum Parvez following a dispute. Tithi had spent some time in jail after his arrest in that case.

He began threatening lawyer Sohel’s family after getting out of jail on bail.

“At one point, Tithi’s mother Amena Begum invited Sohel to go to their home at Dakkhin Chhayabithi to solve the dispute. The convicts hacked him when he went there,” said the APP.
