Bangladesh’s population in 2015 was 158.9 million, up from 150.6 million in 2011.

The birth and mortality rates, too, show a decline during the same period.

The birth rate has declined from 19.2 percent in 2011 to 18.8 percent in 2015, while mortality rate has come down from 5.5 percent to 5.1 percent during the same time.

Literacy rate has jumped from 55.8 percent to 63.6 percent in the same period, the report said.

Expressing happiness over the figures, Planning Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal said, "If the trend continues, no one can stop Bangladesh joining the league of the 10 most developed countries of the world by 2040."
