Three people, who tried to stop the assailants, were also shot and injured during the attack at Botgram in the wee hours of Friday, Sonaimurhi police OC Kazi Haniful Islam said.

He identified the deceased as Asif Uddin, son of Sahab Uddin Master. Asif was an honours second-year student of mathematics at the Noakhali University College.

His father said two brothers named ‘Shahed’ and ‘Shanto’ of Dakkhin Abirparha village had snatched the mobile phone of his younger son ‘Shaon’ on Thursday evening.

Hearing Shaon’s cry for help, Asif and other locals thrashed Shahed and Shanto.

“Then, around 12:30am, Shahed, Shanto and at least eight others attacked our home. They entered by breaking down the door and took everyone hostage. Then Shahed and Shanto shot Asif on the chest from a point-blank range.”

Asif died on the spot, said Sahab Udin.

As the neighbours tried to catch the killers, the attackers opened random fire, leaving three injured, OC Haniful Islam said.

Of them, Md Monir Hossain was admitted to the Noakhali Sadar Hospital, and ‘Mohon’ and Belal Hossain to a private hospital.

Asif’s mother fell ill after the incident, and was later admitted to the same hospital. Her condition was stable, doctors said.

Meanwhile, a firearm and bomb making materials were seized during a raid at Shahed and Shanto’s home in Dakkhin Abirparha on Friday morning, said the district’s Detective Branch OC Ataur Rahman.

But the two brothers are still on the run, he added.
