He told Parliament on Thursday during a question-answer session that a modern research and survey ship, RV Meen Sondhani, had arrived in Chittagong from Malaysia on Jun 9 for the task.

Bangladesh's marine waters cover an area of 118,813 square kilometres and 200 nautical miles of exclusive economic zone.

Around 68,000 small trawlers and boats fish in 32,440 a square-kilometre area stretching about 40 km from the shore, while 241 commercial trawlers go beyond that.

Statistics show around 32.5 million people live on fishing, fish farming, and transport in Bangladesh.

Replying to a question by Nizam Uddin Hazari, the fisheries minister said, “The sea conditions will remain favourable in November. A survey will be conducted that time to determine the fish resources in the marine area.”

He said a similar marine survey had been conducted with the help of a Russian trawler in 1973.

To a query by Safura Begum, Hoque said Bangladesh earned $599 million from fish export in 2014-15 financial year.
