The bench of justices Md Habibul Gani and Md Akram Hossain on Monday granted him six months’ interim bail.

The court also issued a rule asking why Rony should not be granted a permanent bail in the case filed under the Arms Act.

On May 7, Rony was held during a raid led by a judicial magistrate outside a polling centre in Hathazari Upazila during voting. A loaded pistol was found on him.

Rony was booked for trying to influence voters in one case, and under the Arms Act in another for the possession of the firearm and ammunition.

He was given a two-year prison term in the case over the breach of electoral code.

Rony appealed to the Chittagong District and Sessions Judge’s court against the conviction and secured bail.

The court, however, denied bail in the firearms case, after which he had moved the High Court.

“There are no legal hurdles for his release from jail now,” said the BCL leader’s counsel Abdur Razzak.
