Deputy Attorney General Motahar Hossain Saju told bdnews24.com on Wednesday the Narayanganj superintendent of police and Bandar Police Station OC sought the extension, saying they had made progress in the investigation.

Saju said the Narayanganj deputy commissioner also submitted a new report on the district administration's steps over the incident by offering apology to the court.

The commissioner included the decisions taken in the meetings of the District Law and Order Committee and the core committee formed on the issue.

The district administration made the new report following a High Court order. The High Court had found the first report 'carelessly made'.

The deputy attorney general said the bench of Justice Moinul Islam Chowdhury and Justice Md Iqbal Kabir may hear the police petition and receive the report on Thursday.

The headmaster of Piyar Sattar Latif High School, Shyamal Kanti Bhakta, was recently assaulted by a mob and made to do sit-ups holding his ears by local MP Salim Osman for alleged blasphemy.

The incident triggered a nationwide furore, but the school’s managing committee sacked the Hindu teacher. The education ministry then intervened to reinstate Bhakta and dissolved the school’s committee for violating rules.

A government inquiry into the incident on May 13 found inconsistencies in the statements made by the school student who had accused Bhakta of hurting his religious sentiments.

On May 18, the High Court issued a rule along with an interim order asking authorities to report to it, within three days, legal measures taken against those involved in assaulting and humiliating Bhakta, including the MP.
