Mahmuda Aktar, who was married to Superintendent Babul Aktar, was stabbed and shot in the head in the port city of Chittagong on Sunday.

She was on her way to drop her 6-year-old son to a bus stop for school when three men on a motorcycle attacked her just a few hundred yards from her home.

The victim’s brother-in-law said that Mahmuda was buried at graveyard on Sunday night at the capital’s Meradia.

“It was decided that she would be buried in Jhenaidah, but it was changed later,” said Anwar Hossain Labu.

Mahmuda’s murder was similar to the killings carried out by extremists over the past two years, police have said, basing their conclusions on witness accounts and CCTV camera footage.

Her husband Babul Aktar, as additional deputy commissioner with the DB in Chittagong, had played a key role in nabbing top militants and led raids in the past two years, busting their hideouts in the southern coastal district.

The police officer was promoted in April and transferred to Police Headquarters in Dhaka.

But his wife, son and 4-year-old daughter lived in Chittagong. Babul reported for duty in the capital last Thursday.

One of her neighbours said that for the last few days Mahmuda had expressed concerns over her family’s security. She was even considering to move from the apartment they were living in at the port city’s OR Nizam Road.
