Salim Hawlader, who died in his village Baliatali early on Wednesday, was a notorious robber with at least a dozen cases against him in various places including Dhaka, said Muladi Police Station Inspector Humayun Kabir.

“He publicly hacked a man named Ripon to death at Muladi on Apr 27.”

RAB-10 captured him on Monday while he was hiding in Dhaka’s Keraniganj and transferred him to Muladi police.

Policemen reportedly carried Salim with them on a raid to recover weapons around 3am. His gang at Baliatali village started firing on the police personnel.

“Salim died in the crossfire,” said Inspector Kabir.

Two pipe guns, five ammunition rounds and two knives were recovered from the spot, he said.

SI Kamal Chandra Dey, SI Faruk Hawlader and Constable Parvez were given primary medical care for injuries sustained during the gun battle.
