A Cabinet meeting, held in the Secretariat with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Monday, provisionally approved the draft of ‘Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute Act 2016’.

Cabinet Secretary Mohammad Shafiul Alam told reporters that the wheat research centre under Bangladesh Agriculture Research Institute at Dinajpur’s Nashipur would be upgraded to a full institute under the law.
He said Bangladesh lacked an institute to conduct maize research.

“Maize cultivation in the northern region (of the country) is on the rise. That’s why maize research has been added to the institute,” he said.

Alam said the Cabinet adopted a condolence motion at the death of State Minister for Social Welfare Promod Mankin and ‘Begum’ editor Noor Jahan Begum.

Mankin died on May 11 at a hospital in India while Noor Jahan breathed her last on May 23 in Dhaka.

At the beginning of the meeting, Muhith gave the prime minister a crest containing the replica of a Tk 5 denomination as Tk 5 notes have turned government notes.
