Two other activists of the ruling Awami League’s student wing were also injured in the attack at the institute’s main gate on Friday night, Kotwali police OC Ataur Rahman said.

He identified the deceased as Karim Reza, 26, a former student of the institute. Students said he was an active BCL member.

The injured, Mehdi Hasan and Shamsuzzaman Fahim, have been admitted to Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital.

Electrical department student Sazzadur Rahman told reporters that he and several others including the victims were entering the institute on three motorcycles around 9:45pm when at least 20 to 25 youths attacked them with sharp weapons.

Locals took them to the hospital where Reza died around 10:45pm, he said.

Rahman claimed the attackers were posing as Chhatra League activists.

OC Ataur Rahman said there was a turf war going on between two BCL factions, but the reason to launch an attack of such dimensions was not clear yet.
