President’s Chittagong trip cancelled due to bad weather

President Md Abdul Hamid’s visit to Chittagong has been cancelled due to inclement weather.

He was scheduled to attend the 117th birth anniversary of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam on Wednesday.

Hamid was expected to fly off to the port city at 9:30am from Dhaka. But around 9am the press wing informed the media that the trip has been cancelled.

The president was initially scheduled to leave Tuesday afternoon, but it was delayed to Wednesday morning due to bad weather.

Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on May 24, 1899 in Churulia or Bordhoman, presently in West Bengal.

Nazrul who began to write when he was 22 took the Bengali literary world by storm with his moving poetry and lyrics.

'Agnibina', 'Sanchita', 'Dolan Chanpa', 'Chhayanaut' are some of his enduring contribution for posterity.

In 1972, the newly independent nation of Bangladesh obtained permission from the Government of India to bring Nazrul to live in Dhaka and accorded him honorary citizenship.

He was made Bangladesh’s National Poet few days after that.

Four years later, on Aug 29, 1976, Nazrul passed away.

In accordance with a wish he had expressed in one of his poems, he was buried beside the Central Mosque on the campus of the University of Dhaka.
