Police said that three to four men barged into the shoe store of 68-year-old Debesh Chandra Pramanik around 6:30am at the Upazila’s Mahimaganj.

“They slashed up Debesh’s neck and throat leaving him dead on the spot,” said Gabindaganj police OC Md Mozammel Haque.

Police have detained a suspect, 35-year-old Nepen Chandra, over the killing.

“The motive of the murder is not yet clear. Investigations are on to nab the perpetrators,” said OC Haque.

The victim’s family claimed that some local drug addicts tried to extort money from Debesh a few days ago and an argument broke out at the shop as he refused to pay up.

His son Debashish said they suspect that the killing was a sequel to that feud.
