Indian High Commissioner Harsh Vardhan Shringla handed over the vehicles at a ceremony organised by the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs on Tuesday.

Minister for Liberation War affairs AKM Mozammel Haque was present as the chief guest, the Indian High Commission said.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced during his visit last year the gifts of ambulances to the foundation in recognition of its “exemplary work”.

The foundation is a government registered organisation involved in welfare activities for the benefit of the freedom fighters and their descendents, including the holding of seminars and cultural events to keep alive the spirit of the Liberation War.

An ambulance each will be utilised in Dhaka and Chittagong, to move ailing freedom fighters from rural areas to the city for treatment.

The Indian High Commission praised the freedom fighters, saying the saga of their struggle and sacrifice during the Liberation War was written in “letters of gold” in the history of Bangladesh.

“Their brave fight for justice and dignity symbolizes the image of the proud people of Bangladesh,” it said.

Chittagong City Corporation Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin and Chairman of the National Freedom Fighters Foundation SM Jahangir Alam were also present at the ceremony moderated by Senior Vice President of the Foundation Monoranjan Ghosal.
