Six killed in destructions caused by strong winds triggered by cyclone Roanu

Destructions caused by strong winds ahead of Cyclone Roanu have left at least six people dead in coastal Bangladesh.

Over 50 persons have been injured as gusty winds left hundreds of houses damaged and trees uprooted over the night in the coastal districts of Chittagong, Bhola and Patuakhali.
 
The Met office said that the  cyclonic storm Roanu had made a landfall around 1:30pm and started crossing the Chittagong coast of Bangladesh as it weakened causing heavy rains.
 
Maximum sustained wind speed within 54 km of the cyclone centre is about 62 km per hour rising to 88 km per hour in gusts and squalls.
 
Ceaseless rains coupled with gusty winds have been reported from across the country including the capital Dhaka since Friday.
 
The weather office said that heavy rains might cause landslides in the hilly regions of Chittagong and Sylhet divisions.
 
Chittagong
 
An 11-year-old died in the port city while at the district’s Sitakunda Upazila a mother and a son died.
 
In the city’s Panchlaish area, a boy — identified as ‘Rakib’ — was severely injured when a brick fell off from a building due to strong winds and hit the 11-year-old on the head.
 
Police said locals rushed him to the Chittagong Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead.

Meanwhile, a 48-year-old women and her 10-year-old son died after an uprooted tree fell on their house at Sitakunda Upazila early morning on Saturday. 
 
The victims have been identified as Kajal Begum and her son Belal Hossain Babu.
 
Locals said that the mishap occurred around 4:30am.
 
Bhola
 
The local Red Crescent Unit at the island district reported two deaths early morning Saturday.
 
Fourteen-year-old ‘Akram’ was hospitalised around 4am after he was injured when his house was collapsed in the storm at the district’s Tamujuddin Upazila. He died around 6am.
 
The death of Rekha Begum, 35, was reported from the same Upazila, when a tree fell on her house.
 
Residents of Tamujuddin Upazila said strong winds damaged over three hundred shops in the local market.
 
Patuakhali
 
At the coastal district’s Dashmina Upazila, a 52-year-old woman died after her house was damaged in the storm.
 
Upazila administration chief Md Azharul Islam said that the Naya Bibi died in the morning after gusty winds caused her house to collapse.
 
He added that another 10 to 12 houses were damaged in the area.
