Roanu weakens into land depression, signals at seaports drop

The cyclonic storm Roanu moved northeastwards further crossing the Barisal-Chittagong coast and weakened into a land depression through precipitation, the Met office says.

According to a special weather bulletin of the Met office, the cyclone crossed the Bangladesh coast around 5pm on Saturday.
 
Met office Director Shamsuddin Ahmed said Chittagong, Mongla, Payra and Cox’s Bazar ports had been advised to lower danger signals and hoist local cautionary signal number 3. 
 
Until the new bulletin, Chittagong, Mongla and Payra ports were showing danger signal number 7 and Cox’s Bazar 6.
 
According to meteorologists, the first cyclone of this monsoon struck Swandip, Hatia, Kutubdia, Sitakunda and Feni in the afternoon and crossed the Bangladesh territory several hours later through precipitation.
 
Meteorologist Omar Faruk told bdnews24.com that the storm was over Tripura and Mizoram in India on Saturday evening.
 
The Met office bulletin said squally weather might continue over the North Bay, coastal areas of Bangladesh and the maritime ports for two more days under the influence of the storm.
 
At least 21 died in the storm in coastal districts, including Chittagong, Bhola, Patuakhali, Feni, Noakhali, Lakshmipur and Cox’s Bazar.
