“I will request that you evaluate whether a project is actually needed before you start working on it," she said in Dhaka on Thursday.

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) was also asked to consider the same, she said.

“I asked a question during an ECNEC meeting. What do we think about when we undertake a project?

“Do we think about the country’s development or the commission one might get? What is more important?”

A tall embankment and a sluice gate were built on Pachuria canal at Gopalganj, her home village, wasting funds without ‘any need’, she said.

She mentioned how her government raised the salaries for state officials.

The finance ministry, she said, has been told to arrange for special increments for diploma engineers and those working in planning and design, like other technical professionals when they enter a job.

“I hope the ministry will soon give a directive on this matter.”
