The 14-year-old boy studies in a high school in the Ramganj Upazila.

Quoting classmates, the student’s family said the teacher, Monir Hossain Molla, had pulled up the boy on Saturday morning after he found him speaking to another examinee.

“He beat him with a ruler in front of all the students,” the boy’s uncle told bdnews24.com.

He claimed that the teacher then ‘kicked him on the chest and thrashed him indiscriminately’ when the boy refused to take the exam.

The school authorities regretted the incident, saying it was ‘unfortunate’.

Molla later apologised for the incident in a mediation organised by Ramganj Upazila administration chief (UNO) Md Abu Yousuf.

“The marks on the student’s body are more visible because the colour of his skin is white. They wouldn't be visible if his skin were darker," the teacher said to defend himself.
