The National Moon-Sighting Committee made the announcement as the Shaban moon was not sighted on Saturday.

Devotees observe the night by praying Namaz and reciting the Quran, the holy book for Muslims.

The following day, May 23, is therefore a government holiday.

“The Shaban moon was not seen tonight. Shab-e-Barat will be on May 22,” said Md Amzad Ali, joint secretary for the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

Shaban, the eighth month of the Islamic calendar, for the year 1436 will begin on Monday.

Shab-e-Barat is observed on the fifteenth night of the month, just fifteen days before the arrival of Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims.
